Note: about ship (the Crown of London}:

A man by the name of "Provost, Milns, Laird of Barnton," was the person who transacted with

Mr. William Patterson, a merchant from Leith, to transport the remaining of the Covenant, prisoners (258) who fought in the Battle of Bothwell Brig (Bridge) to America or the West Indies, where they were to have been sold as slaves. The Captain of the ship was named Thomas Tedicco, and not Patterson. William Patterson was the owner of the ship. In fact, in a petition dated 06 March, 1680, Mr. Patterson petitioned the Privy Council for the loss of his ship the Crown of London, and the loss of all but 30 of the 258 prisoners which the ship was carrying. That ship was mastered by Captain Thomas Teddico.

List of those prisoners who escaped but were not recaptured:

(After escaping these men then managed to secure passage to North Ireland.)

Clark, Andrew
Thomson, Andrew
Gardner, John
Thomson, John
Martin, John
Thomson, Thomas
Miller, Thomas
Waddell, William
Montgomery, Hugh
Young, James

Further Notes:

Additional reports state that there was another group of escaping survivors that persuaded the captain of a Dutch Merchant ship to allow them to sail to Holland. And still, there were others who elected to remain there on the Orkney Islands.

It is my belief that the two Richardson brothers, John and William are, in actuality, the ancestors of my family, (the family of William Veir Rich) that these two men, while trying to avoid recapture did, in fact, change their names to simply Rich (It is, in actuality a very common practice for a Scot to either shorten his name or to make contractions of his name). These two brothers then made their way to the Isle of Hoy and to the village of Rackwick, where the family name did remain for the next couple of hundred years.

There is, at least, one family in the Orkney Islands with the surname of Ritch and another with the name of Richie/Ritchie. However, both civil and church records do, in fact, show that our own surname has always been spelled as Rich, at least, that is, since those two Richardson brothers arrived in the Orkney Islands. Therefore, the families of Ritch, Richie and Ritchie are not necessarily related by blood-lines to our own family.

Note: Reports are that there were 50 Covenanters who survived the wreck of the "Crown". This list shows the names of 51 individuals. I feel that there is a duplication of the name of James Atichison, it is also listed as James Aitchison. Further, reports also state that there were a total of 250 prisoners aboard the "Crown", this list (after deleteing the name of James Aitchison) shows only 245 names. In other words, this list is five names short. Further research must be done to rectify this situation.
