    Joseph was blinded as a young man and did not appear in any of the family photographs after this happened. Joeseph got rust flakes in his eyes when bending hoop iron to make chicken coops. He went blind in one eye and then developed sympathetic blindness in the other eye. He never saw any of his children but is remember with great fondness by his grandchildren Bob Ballinger and Floris Pianta.
    They speak of him as alovely man who played with them and Bob remembers trying to creep into the house and trick him but he always knew there was someone there and would call Bob's name. Bob never fooled him. Bob also tells of how he used to athch mice by sitting very still and waiting for them to climb up his leg then he would catch them.
