Mary Ann was born on July 10th, 1847 in Launceston, Tas.1   Mary Ann's father was William BURGESS and her mother was Sarah JARMAN.  Her paternal grandparents were Richard BURGESS and Johannah SAUNDERS. She had seven brothers and a sister, named William, David, Edward, Frederick, George Henry, Alfred Albert, Walter and Eliza.  She was the second oldest of the nine children. She had a half-brother and eight half-sisters, named Francis, Martha, Louisa Laura, Jane Elizabeth Maria, Isabella Blanche, Alice Mary, Selina (Tottie), Maude and Mabel Isabelle.
